For configuration management + FIM we just distinct count path + hostname tier, you don't really need PIDs if 1000's of servers are configured identically in chef. That applies to <20% of tiers, but those 20% are the ones worth watching at this time. If you are familiar with FB infra the next cardinality is much larger, but we do those distinct counts in various places too
