we're diverged a bit due to dependency hell on various distributions of Linux. Overall it's been a huge win for our small team since we now have deterministic versions managed independent of the OS the builder is using. Relying on the OS to provide C/C++ dependency packages is not good form for Linux. Using this new model we can control compiler flags and other goodies, like patching inline when things break upstream. There are a few Github issues with more details but anyways... it means a LOT more work for OS maintainers since we don't keep up with all of the breakage.
