actually.... i was thinking about it this morning. I or one of us should go though the source on fluentd's and logstash's aws kinesis plugin. They are both tried and true log forwarders for kinesis. We can check out how they are doing random partition key code. They are not C++ but they may shed some light on the subject. If i get some time over the next few days, i can take a look
