because for instance, on the macbook I use, I have a NFS mount toward a guest macOS VM, but source and build is all on the guest VM, that works fine. For Linux/Ubuntu I work on the guest VM, but an NFS mount could be used in the same way (although past experience tells me that macOS NFS <-> Linux NFS interaction is tricky, but can be done)
