Well it's actually a bit more complex than that. The events are typically only "expired" when the query is tabled. So If you set

--events_expiry=1

and have only one query against that table, things will probably work fine. If you have multiple queries, each one of those queries will cause the events to expire and then the other queries won't pick it up.
