do the results of the queries only get saved to result.log? is it getting saved in the sql db at all?

Yes. MySQL would not be a good place to store the results
You will want to ingest the results into a ELK/Splunk/etc. type of platform

Out of interest, why do you think a sql database would be a bad place to store results to what are essentially sql queries?
