anyone has any insight on pre-release 4.0 on all these sst reads? machines gets extremely sloooow..

Are you using tls or kinesis logger? Those are based on buffered_logger, which caches results in rocksdb and causes this type of thing. Try with filesystem logger and see if results differ. Unfortunately, there aren't replacements for those loggers yet.
